2013 RightNow Conference

Leaders have a habit of comparing themselves with those whose ministries are growing or well-known. Many seek the next “big thing" that will increase their influence, power and sense of self-worth. In this 20-minute session from the 2013 RightNow Conference, Todd Wagner, Senior Pastor of Watermark Community Church in Dallas, Texas, encourages church leaders to stay connected and spiritually vibrant in their relationship with Jesus so that their focus is not with the timing of what God will do with them and through them, but instead on remaining a faithful servant of Jesus Christ.

As you watch this session, take notes and write down thoughts about how this session can impact your role.

Todd's principles for leaders to remember:
  1. God is never delighted and is always troubled by the death of the wicked.
  2. God is always offering forgiveness and friendship to anyone who wants it as long as they are alive to take it.
  3. God is always sovereign, even over devils. He is never surprised or sabotaged by schemers.

Todd said many ministry leaders protect their busy ministry lifestyles out of a sense to increase their influence, power and sense of self-worth. How do you effectively safeguard against this way of thinking?

Todd also said, “You don’t have to give yourself off to some of the crazy things some people pursue to have some evidence that God is at work because God is at work everywhere to change lives.” What are some of the crazy things you have pursued? How effective were they? How has God shown you that He's been at work in your ministry? What surprises has He given you?

How can you, as a leader, stay focused on Christ instead of worrying about your ministry? How can you teach others who work with you to do the same?

Todd said, "Don’t worry about speakers and other people’s ministries, just tend and care for the sheep—love and provide. Seek to be a disciple that Jesus loves, that obeys Him and loves Him. You might live in isolation on an island that no one knows, but you will never regret it."
