How Do You Spend Your Time?

In Part 1, Don Soderquist encouraged leaders to determine their personal core values. In the second half of this course, he discusses specific areas in which we apply values in the workplace. If you have not completed Part 1 of this course, you will find it helpful to complete it for your foundation before you continue with this post, which gets into specifics.
How we allocate our time reflects what we value more so than what we say. In this first teaching, Don challenges our personal application of our values.

How do you spend your time? Consider what you do each hour of the day. Do your activities and the time allocated to them match the values that you listed in Part 1?

Culture: The Bottom Line Advantage

The culture of an organization will communicate values to its employees much louder than what it writes or says. Don talks about the unique culture of Walmart that made a difference in the bottom line performance.

How intentional is your company about bottom line performance? Do employees engaged in day-to-day core operation have specific, clear expectations for excellence?

What does the culture of your organization communicate to its employees? If you asked them to write down the values of your company based on your culture (and not on your literature), what would they write?

If you are an owner and do not know how to answer that second question, try that experiment this week. Send a company-wide email or a short form asking everyone to assess the core values of your business. Meet with your leadership and honestly discuss the results.

Casting Vision

In the final teaching, Don talks about the values attached to the company itself, and how vision casting should embody these things.

What a company values and what it intends to accomplish should be expressed in its vision statement. Consider your organization's vision as you work through these questions.

What is the vision statement for your company? Does it reflect the company's core values?

Assess the feelings of respect across your organization. What practical steps could your company take in order to insure that every employee feels respected and valued?

Values do matter. Don has stressed that we each form our personal values, apply these in the way we allocate our days, form a culture for our employees and co-workers, and cast a vision for our companies. The way that we practically do each of these will reflect what is truly important to each of us.
