Power in This Hour

2012 RightNow Conference

In this 30-minute session from the 2012 RightNow Conference, Coach Bill McCartney, Founder of Promise Keepers and former head football coach of the University of Colorado, shares how daily time in the Word of God feeds our souls and strengthens our spirit.

The core strength of our bodies consists of muscle groups that are critical for the transfer of energy from the center of the body to the limbs. But our core spiritual strength, though unseen, is the most important part of our bodies.

Our spiritual strength is revealed in our mental, emotional, and spiritual health. How are you taking care of your spiritual health?

As you watch this session, take notes and write down thoughts about how this session can impact your own life and ministry.

Matthew 4:4 says that our souls have to be fed. How are you discipling people to be in the Word of God daily? How are you modeling that discipline yourself?

Coach McCartney  gave three important motivations he used as a coach and drew the parallel to our faith:
  1. Who are you? (Identity) We are born again: John 3:6
  2. Where are you going? (Goal)  Spend eternity with God: 1 Peter 1:2–3
  3. How are you getting there? (Strategy) Set your heart on heaven: 1 Col. 3:1–2

How does that motivate and inspire you? How can that motivation apply in the way you lead others?

Coach McCartney referred to Deuteronomy 6 when talking about the God's command to build a legacy of faith beyond our children.
  1. Teach my Word to them
  2. Repeat my Word to them
  3. Talk about my Word in the home and outside
  4. Talk about my Word at bed and when you get up
  5. Write my Word as reminders

How are you passing along your legacy of faith to your family? How are you equipping the people in your church to pass along their faith?

People are looking for good, godly leaders. How about you—the one God place here by divine design? It's time for you to lead the charge and show the Church how to get there.

And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say, "Is there any man who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go back to his house, lest he make the heart of his fellows melt like his own."    ~Deuteronomy 20:8 (ESV)
