In our consumer-driven society, it can be challenging to lead people to trade in their personal pursuits to become followers of Christ. In this 55-minute session from the 2009 RightNow Conference, George Barna, author, speaker and founder of The Barna Group, examined the lives of 30 successful leaders to present six checkpoints in understanding the qualities of effective leadership. This session will give leaders insight into their own effectiveness and ways to improve their leadership.

George Barna talked about the struggles that pastors are facing, “They feel like they’re in a hole that they can’t get out of. They’ve got all this stuff that has nothing to do with where God’s vision would lead them to go.” What challenges do you see pastors facing today?

George gave six checkpoints for effective leadership:
  1. Leaders can strategically change reality, but they cannot intentionally change people.
  2. Nobody is "the complete leadership package," so it's important to work in a leadership team.
  3. One of the most undervalued and least common skills among leaders is listening.
  4. Leaders must master conflict and confrontation.
  5. Success is helping people achieve their potential.
  6. Do not accept a leadership position unless you're ready to pay a stiff price. The more significant the outcome you seek to achieve, the more substantial the price you can expect to pay.

George stated that these checkpoints are all significant in our growth as leaders but we may not feel they are of equal value. What are some of the checkpoints you felt were more personally valuable to you? Why? How are you using those in your ministry role?

George said that the hallmark of genuine leaders is that they are always learning and improving; and they are interacting with other leaders about leadership with a joy in helping others to grow. How many leaders exist in our ministry who have yet to use their gifts and abilities within a leadership team? What’s holding them back from doing so? How do we validate and lead those who are not on staff to have effective ministry outside the walls of our church?

Ultimately, whatever capacity of leadership we serve in, we lead because God has called us. If he hasn’t called us, we shouldn’t be leading. So we must know what we stand for, refuse to compromise, examine our motives, and let the chips fall where they may.  Leadership is about God’s vision, not our own.
