Four Foundational Leadership Principles

Back to the Basics

As we grow as leaders, input from men and women who lead well can help us develop ourselves. In this video from the WorkMatters FUSE Forum, Doug Sherman, CEO of Oak Mortgage Group and author of Your Work Matters, shares four principles that sit at the foundation of his leadership.

Doug outlined four principles of leadership that he believes are foundational to the position:
  1. Lead by example
  2. Anticipate problems before they occur
  3. Set clear expectations
  4. Lead with humility
All four aim at equipping the people of an organization to do their best work and to pave the way for their success.

As a leader, people look to you to set the tone for the day. In what ways have you observed your behaviors or attitudes affecting your people? Does knowing that you may set the tone for your people affect the way your approach your day? If so, how? If not, why not?
