Lead Like Jesus Encounter Workshop

What are the key elements of leadership? Listen as Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges describe the importance of having a clear vision, commitment to service, and understanding of change so that you and those you lead stay focused and maintain enthusiasm. 

Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges are the co-founders of Lead Like Jesus, a global leadership development organization that inspires and equips leaders to model Jesus. They are also co-authors of two books, Leadership by the Book and Lead Like Jesus.  

Ken described two parts of leadership:

  1. Vision: What do you want to accomplish and what will guide the journey?
  2. Implementation: How can you serve your team to help them get there? 

Ken said that vision encompasses purpose, future, values, and goals. What vision do you have for your organization? What values are driving the journey? What goals are keeping your team focused?

Ken encouraged us implement our vision by serving our team, as Jesus did. What hesitations might you have about servant leadership? How do you serve your team, and in what ways could you grow in sacrificial service?

In this video, Phil Hodges outlines four levels of organizational change and then seven things for leaders to be aware of when implementing change. 

Phil listed the four levels of change: knowledge, attitude, behavior, and culture. When have you experienced a change of culture? When have you seen change stop at the attitude level? What went wrong in that situation, or what could have been done differently?

Phil shared seven dynamics of change:

  1. Change is awkward and uncomfortable, so give people the why behind the what.
  2. Change can make people feel alone, so give them space to share their feelings.
  3. People usually think about what they’ll have to give up, so paint the vision well. 
  4. People have a threshold of change, so be strategic about how much changes at one time.
  5. People do not believe they have enough resources, so point them to resources.
  6. People are at different levels of readiness for change, so give grace to those who find it harder.
  7. People will revert back to where they were, so keep the pressure on.
