Teaching Students to Surrender Their Lives featuring Francis Chan

We can often be inspired by what other young people are doing. Watch what happened when Eleazar, Kaleb, and Ryan found out that people were taking missions trips to their own city.

Are we teaching our students that serving others all builds up to a summer mission trip? There are hurting people in our own back yard. What have we been doing throughout the year? Do you have any ideas about who and what areas in your community need help?

Francis Chan is a nationally-recognized speaker and the best-selling author of "Crazy Love" and "Forgotten God." He is passionate about seeing teens display a much deeper love for Jesus and their neighbors. After listening to what these students were doing in their own city, Francis shows us how he encourages students to make the most of the brief time they have on earth to make a lasting difference in the lives of others.

Francis said, “High school was one of the greatest opportunities in my life to actually reach people. Like never again in your life will you have that many people that you live life with every day.” As you listen to the students in your group, are they focused on the future, or on making the most of their time now? Is it realistic to think that teens will want to live “on mission” for God at their high school? How can you encourage that?

Is there one student in your group that you could call or email this week who could lead a movement of service? How could you help them become a leader?

Why do you think Francis tells about the death of his mother, stepmother, and father? How can you convey the fragility and brevity of life to your group?

What we teach our students needs to propel them into the week in which he is guiding their steps. An annual mission trip will then be the natural outgrowth of a life that is already serving others in God’s name.
