Teaching Students to Surrender Status featuring Francis Chan

How do students in your group define who they are? Is it in the things that they do? Is it in what others think of them? Watch this dramatic video of the pressures that they are going through.

Think of the students in your group. What pressures do they experience at school, at home, and at church to fit in? How do you encourage them to “be who God wants them to be?”

It can be tempting for teens to compromise what they know to be right in order to fit in and be popular. Listen to Heather’s story, and the struggles she faced after being injured and unable to play sports—the one thing that really defined who she was.

Heather said, “God put me through all of this for a certain purpose, and still today I do not know the reason why he…put me through this.” What do you say to someone like Heather? Is there a “Heather” in your group that you can encourage this week?

Francis Chan is a nationally-recognized speaker and the best-selling author of "Crazy Love" and "Forgotten God." He is passionate about seeing teens display a much deeper love for Jesus and their neighbors. After listening to Heather's story, Francis shows how he would talk to students about surrendering their status—their popularity—to God.

Francis Chan challenges students with some pretty strong thoughts in this video. He said, “You really can’t follow God and fit in.” Why would he say that? Is it true? Why can’t teens fit in?

Does that mean you should encourage your students to try to be "odd"? Should they try not to fit in? How would you do that?

It takes great courage for teens to be willing to look to God for their identity and to take a stand for Jesus, especially at school. Take some time this week and pray for each student in your group. Pray that God will give them the strength to “be different” for Him.
