Congratulations! Your preschooler is growing up and school beckons. For many mothers the prospect of their little one starting school is "a thing" just as the prospect of giving birth is "a thing" during pregnancy. It looms in the future and, as it gets ever closer, it occupies more and more thinking time. Rightly so because Starting School is a big event in a child's life. It denotes growing up and moving on. For a mum it can mean the end of going to preschool clubs together, a change of childminding arrangements that have worked for years and a very real letting go of your little one. Many moms don't feel they are emotionally ready and the doom and gloom of others in the same boat doesn't help.
This change of season actually starts during the 12 months before Starting School. A cloud of sadness can descend upon a mom as time ticks by and she moves through the last preschool autumn, winter, spring and summer. During this period parents will apply for a school place, a tiny uniform (if needed) will be bought, introduction days might take place. Children are made ready for the transition and learn how to hold a pencil, try to write their name, use scissors and sit down quietly for stories. Toilet training is a big part of preparing preschoolers for school and is a parenting experience all of its own.
